About:

Valerie L. Taylor is a CPC-Intern with a Master’s Degree in Counseling, dedicated to helping clients navigate emotional and psychological challenges. She is committed to fostering a balanced and therapeutic relationship, which she believes is essential to promoting mental health growth and healing. Valerie’s therapeutic style is relaxed yet focused, ensuring an engaging environment that prioritizes client progress.

Drawing on her extensive expertise and empathy, Valerie collaborates with clients to identify personalized counseling goals. She takes an eclectic approach, integrating various counseling theories and interventions to tailor therapeutic support to each individual.

In addition to her counseling work, Valerie brings valuable experience as a professor, trauma-informed yoga instructor, and community health educator and advocate. This diverse background enables her to support clients in addressing mental health struggles holistically, within a compassionate and nurturing environment.

Education:

Valerie holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling from Wake Forest University, a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership and Communication from Northeastern University, a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Public Administration from Nova Southeastern University, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from Howard University. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Valerie is a certified yoga instructor, having earned her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training (200YTT) certification, along with a Trauma-Informed Yoga Teaching certificate.

Experience:

Valerie has extensive experience providing mental health counseling to teens, adults, and couples, including those in non-traditional relationships. She is dedicated to offering compassionate care to clients across diverse communities, including people of color, LGBTQ+, immigrants, caregivers, seniors, and other marginalized groups. Valerie has also supported the State Bar of Nevada Lawyer Assistance Program by co-facilitating support groups and presenting on panels.

With a background in social justice and health equity, Valerie integrates cultural responsiveness and self-empowerment into her therapeutic approach. She combines traditional counseling techniques with mindfulness, meditation, and yoga to help clients build resilience and coping skills.

Valerie began her career in rape prevention and continues to support anti-violence initiatives. She has worked on various social campaigns and provided education and advocacy on women’s health, including breast cancer, HIV, and reproductive issues. Valerie also serves as a board member for organizations focused on women, girls, and the Black community, while teaching African American Studies, Gender Studies, and Multicultural Education at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Her areas of focus include anxiety, depression, grief, life transitions, self-esteem, trauma, ADHD, and supporting clients from diverse backgrounds, including people of color and LGBTQIA+ communities.
